Four Daily Habits to Help Manage Your Anxiety

Anxiety can be experienced in a way that makes it difficult to cope with daily life. It affects around one in seven Australians every year.

Anxiety - Your Wellness Centre Naturopathy If this is you, you could experience anxiety physical symptoms as well as anxiety about sleep. Further symptoms include worrying, a racing heart, panic attacks, fatigue, digestive upset, sweating, or headaches – interfering with your ability to live your life.

There are several worry-busting habits you can develop to help minimise its effects. Read on to discover our top four habits that can leave you feeling calmer and in control.

1. Practice being present

Mindfulness is the act of focusing on the present moment, drawing your attention away from mental chatter and anxious thoughts by tuning in to your physical senses (i.e. what is happening in your environment and body).

When you’re in the grip of anxiety, mindfulness may seem impossible. However, a growing body of scientific research shows that practicing mindfulness daily can actually help break the cycle of worry, making it one of the most effective habits for gaining peace of mind.

Here are some tips to make developing a mindfulness practice easier:

  • Stone Balance Mindfulness - Your Wellness Centre NaturopathyStart with just five minutes per day, and slowly work your way up to 20 minutes (research has shown that 20 minutes or more provides the greatest benefit for anxiety);
  • Use guided meditations and breathing exercises to keep you focused;
  • Work mindfulness into your daily routine, like meditating on your lunch break; and
  • If anxiety makes it difficult for you to sit still, consider going for a walk. Concentrate on the sights and sounds around you, the feeling of your body moving, and the sensation of the wind on your skin. If you notice your mind wandering, gently bring it back to the present moment.

2. Journal. This helps you deal with your thoughts

Journaling - Your Wellness Centre Naturopathy

Journaling regularly can help you express and understand your anxiety triggers.

“By putting your worries down on paper, journaling can help you deconstruct anxious thoughts, examine emotions and situations, or even help you seek solutions to your triggers.”

Here are two methods that may be helpful for anxiety:

Exploratory journaling involves 10 to 15 minutes of writing down whatever is on your mind, as fast as you can, without judging yourself. This approach can help you identify thoughts and feelings, including those you may be unaware of, that could be contributing to your anxiety. Seeing them written down on paper can help you ‘fact-check’ anxious thoughts (i.e. consider whether they are accurate), and gain greater clarity about the thoughts and feelings that are making you anxious. This can help you become more aware of your triggers, which is the first step toward managing them.

Action-focused journaling can help you develop an action plan to deal with ongoing situations that trigger your anxiety. Setting aside 10 to 15 minutes for this exercise, begin writing about a problem or situation that contributes to your anxiety (e.g. poor time management). Next, brainstorm some steps you could take to overcome the problem (e.g. creating a schedule), and break these into smaller action items (e.g. set up a calendar to track of your schedule, set reminders to help you stick to it). Lastly, create some realistic goals to help you complete these actions.

Monitor your progress on a regular basis, and celebrate any positive changes you’ve experienced since implementing your action plan.

3. Exercise to encourage feeling good

“Aside from serving as a distraction, exercise has been shown to bump up your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters – leaving you feeling more relaxed.”

Jogging Exercise - Your Wellness Centre NaturopathyNeurotransmitters are messenger molecules made by your brain, that carry signals throughout it, influencing your mood. They also carry messages between your brain and other cells in your body (such as your muscles). Boosting feel-good neurotransmitters can reduce anxiety and relieve muscle tension.

A successful exercise regime can involve any kind of physical activity, such as walking, jogging, swimming, weight lifting or hiking. Essentially, it can be anything that moves your body for at least 2.5 to 5 hours per week. Start by easing yourself in with a few shorter sessions first, and carve out some time in your schedule to make exercise a consistent habit. Asking a friend or family member to join you adds the extra bonus of connecting with loved ones who can help you feel supported as you work to improve your anxiety.

4. Tap into the soothing power of natural medicine

For centuries, herbal medicine has been used to help soothe an anxious mind. We now know that many of these herbs work by increasing the activity of a calming neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This neurotransmitter reduces brain activity, helping you feel less anxious without making you drowsy, and also eases muscle tension.

Botanical combinations that can help you when anxiety kicks in include:

  • Rehmannia and American ginseng, are both used in traditional herbal medicine to soothe a ‘wired and tired’ (anxious and fatigued) mind. American ginseng also works by increasing the brain’s levels of neurotransmitters, including GABA and serotonin3;
  • Zizyphus and Passionflower, both increase GABA activity4,5 and work rapidly to reduce anxiety. This combination also helps to support a night of restful sleep (without making you feel drowsy the next day); and
  • Kudzu may reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a racing heart, trembling hands, and sweating.

In addition, magnesium bisglycinate offers several benefits. It reduces physical tension and is also required by the body to produce neurotransmitters, such as serotonin. Additionally, magnesium bisglycinate combines magnesium with glycine, allowing you to more quickly and thoroughly absorb the magnesium (compared with other forms of magnesium), bringing you better anxiety-busting benefits. As an added bonus, glycine can also increase feelings of calmness.

Magnesium deficiency is common, especially in stressed and anxious people, so consider a magnesium bisglycinate supplement to make sure you’re getting what you need.

Turn inner calamity into inner calm

When it comes to easing your anxiety, mindfulness, journaling, and regular exercise can offer profound benefits. Beyond this, natural medicine in the form of herbs and nutrients can also bring a greater sense of calm. Today we are going to look at how stress can affect weight loss.

For many of us, daily life is often a juggle, as we try to keep many balls up in the air at once. All this ‘juggling’ can contribute to feelings of stress, tension and anxiety. Unfortunately, too much stress can actually reduce your ability to burn fat and lose weight.

How Stress Affect Weight Loss

Your Wellness Centre Naturopathy - StressStress affects your body by increasing cortisol levels; Cortisol is a hormone released by the adrenal glands in response to stress, high oestrogen levels, and nutritional deficiencies. Cortisol is often referred to as the body’s ‘stress hormone’. Increased cortisol levels can adversely affect blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and can stop you from burning fat.

This is because cortisol stimulates the release of insulin, the hormone which plays an important role in maintaining blood sugar levels.

This increased release of insulin often tends to encourage people to overeat and crave foods high in carbohydrates and fats. When you increase your consumption of these foods it directly causes weight gain.

So you want to have ways to manage stress. This can then help reduce excessive cortisol and stop the resultant insulin resistance and obesity. You’ll notice less deposition of fatty tissue, particularly in the abdominal region.

Last night I was quite touched when viewing the ABC’s program Changing Minds.  Changing Minds was filmed in the mental health unit of the NSW Liverpool hospital and gave us insight into the struggle experienced by sufferers of some really serious mental illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Depression.

Your Wellness Centre Naturopathy - Mood Disorders and Depression

A worthwhile program to have watched because mental illness is infrequently discussed bears a social stigma and does not discriminate.

Depression, Most Common Mental Illness

There is a wide range of mental illnesses the most commonly known being Depression and Anxiety which naturopaths at Your Wellness Centre provide natural treatment for. Following is a discussion of depression.

Occasional Low Moods are Normal

Whilst it is normal to feel down occasionally, there are people whose lives can become engulfed by a constant dark cloud of negative feelings and low moods. These people may also find that their mood can affect their appetite, sleeping patterns, and general health.

Many People Struggle with Low Moods

The heartbreaking news is that today, there are at least one million people in Australia that have been diagnosed with a mood disorder. The good news is that natural therapies may provide some options for you if you are struggling with low moods.

What Affects our Moods?

It seems that the world today is so much busier; many of us are working longer hours and not spending enough time looking after ourselves. Throw in financial problems and relationship issues and it’s easy to see how our emotions can become affected. However, did you know that other things such as our diet, being overweight, hormonal imbalances and even chronic pain can contribute to the spiral of sadness? These things can upset the delicate chemical balance within our brains, so it is essential to address these factors if you have mood problems. Fortunately, our clinic may bring you back into balance with a range of well-researched management programs and nutritional and herbal medicines designed to address mood disorders, and may help to resolve any driving factors.

Lifting the Dark Clouds

When it comes to helping people maintain their moods, we believe quite strongly that one shoe doesn’t fit all; this is why we manage each person individually. We use a number of well researched natural medicines that may be very effective for helping people with low moods. Here are some examples.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and SAMe

5-HTP is a nutrient derived from the amino acid tryptophan. SAMe is a substance that is naturally made in our bodies. These two nutrients may be useful to support the normal functioning of our brain and nervous system. Both 5-HTP and SAMe may help to correct imbalances in your neurotransmitters or ‘brain chemicals’. This may help to improve anxiety, irritability, and that overwhelming chocolate or sweet craving that you get when you are sad!

St John’s Wort, another popular herb, has many beneficial actions for maintaining healthy moods. In fact, scientific studies have shown that it can help to regulate many of our ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine. In doing so, it may help improve mental health. Did you know that St John’s Wort can interact with some conventional medications? As your Natural Healthcare Professional, we can help determine whether St John’s Wort is suitable for your needs.

The Importance of Good Diet and Regular Exercise

Regular Exercise - Your Wellness Centre Naturopathy MelbourneAs well as Natural Medicines, it is important that we look at your diet and lifestyle. Poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle can exacerbate the effect that stress and low moods have on your body. At this clinic we have a number of dietary and exercise plans that we can advise you on to help you eat well and feel better, creating a lasting change and true wellness.

Other Important Management Strategies

Other recommendations we could discuss to help you better manage your moods include the following:

  • Counseling: Counselling is offered by various types of mental health professionals. Counseling and therapy have proven benefits in the reduction of mood symptoms and improvement in overall mental health and attitude.

Your Wellness Centre Naturopathy Melbourne - Meditation

  • Relaxation techniques: There are many ways to use structured relaxation techniques to help control stress and improve physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Meditation: Meditation is one of the most popular techniques to achieve physical and mental relaxation.
  • Support systems: People with strong social support systems experience fewer physical and emotional upsets than their less-connected counterparts. Loved ones, friends, business associates, neighbours, and even pets may all be part of your support network. Developing strong social support networks can help you cope with sadness and low moods.
  • Life goals: Having a firm purpose in life is associated with the tendency to have less anxiety and a lower incidence of depression.

If you, or somebody you know, is feeling down, then it is a good idea to make an appointment. Your Wellness Centre may offer you real solutions to help improve your mood and overall wellbeing.
